Coach John Wooden was a basketball player that was entered into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1961. In 1948 he was head coach at UCLA. He led his team to win 88 consecutive games and 10 NCAA championships and named national coach of the year six times. He died of natural causes on June 10, 2010, at age 99.

I wanted to post some of his quotes I have pined on my cork board. As you can probably tell by now, I like quotes.

  • Never try to be better than someone else. Learn from others, but be your very best.
  • It’s the things we learn after we know it all that really matter in life.
  • If you lose your temper you will be outplayed.
  • The biggest failure of all is the failure to act.
  • Team spirit is consideration for others.

Coach Wooden didn’t just coach basketball, he taught valuable principles to incorporate into everyday life. Coach Wood shared with his team his Seven Point Creed that his father gave to him.

  • Be true to yourself.
  • Make each day your masterpiece.
  • Help others.
  • Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.
  • Make friendship a fine art.
  • Build a shelter against a rainy day.
  • Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings every day.

A few of Wooden’s maxims include:

  • Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.
  • Flexibility is the key to stability.
  • Be quick, but don’t hurry.

A great deal can be learned from sports, especially when there is a coach that has the wisdom to teach the team about true principles that make a person better all around.
